The Redpath Society's final function for the 2008/09 season featured the upcoming "Ashes 09" series so who would be best to talk about that... none other than Mervyn. G. Hughes who is an Australian Cricketing Legend and current Australian Test Selector. Standing in for regular host Greg Wells was Cricket Victoria Media Manager and Geelong Cricket Club's own Legend Jason Bakker whom posed Merv all the "Hard Questions" aided and abetted by several members of the Society present at the function which was held at the Bruce Moore room @ Kardinia Park. On the night all tables were asked to pen their Ashes first Test side, the main consensus was: Phillip Hughes Simon Katich Ricky Ponting (c) Micheal Hussey Micheal Clarke (vc) Marcus North Brad Haddin Mitchell Johnson Nathan Hauritz Stuart Clark Peter Siddle
12th man- Andrew McDonald
With news arising that Geelong Cricket Club Youngster Merryck Buchanan has been selected to tour India with the Australian U/15 World Cup side Jason Bakker kindly donated a signed kookaburra bat signed by a selection of Australian, Pakistani and Indian players from the 2002/03 Carlton and United which at auction raised $600 towards his trip which is self funded. Merv wound back the clock and remenised with MC Bakker about his First-Class debut at the one and only Kardinia Park, playing football at Lara Football club in his younger days, playing in the 1988-89 Ashes and his triumphant 1993 Ashes series. The 'Famous' quiz racked each tables brains-trust which was mainly composed of Ashes related questions and current sporting events. Ian Redpath toasted and roasted Merv with a few of his first encounters with the big fella and a few run-ins with Hughes when he was the Victorian Coach. Overall a great night was had by all whom attented, after each event the Redpath Socitey continues to grow and become more popular with local business identities, former club players and current players Videos from the night can be found in the GCC TV section of this website and at http://youtube.com/user/GeelongCC |
